The Mall of America Story

  1. Minnesota Twins and Vikings move from Metropolitan Stadium (now the site of Mall of America) to the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis.
  2. The City of Bloomington distributes a world-wide Request for Proposal to develop former Metropolitan Stadium site.
  3. The Bloomington City Council approves Triple Five’s final development plan for Mall of America and Fantasyworld, as the theme park concept was originally named.
  4. Snoopy joins City of Bloomington officials and local dignitaries for Mall of America groundbreaking ceremony.
  5. Mall of America celebrates its grand opening with at least 150,000 guests.
  6. The now-iconic Rainforest Café opens its first location on Level 1, South at MOA.
  7. Underwater World, now known as SEA LIFE Minnesota, opens at MOA.
  8. MOA commemorates 9/11 memorial in Nordstrom Court to honor Thomas Burnett Jr. and the passengers of United Flight 93.
  9. Metro Transit opens Blue Line light rail station at MOA.
  10. Nickelodeon Universe opens to crowds of superfans.
  11. The 500-room Radisson Blu hotel opens at MOA.
  12. MOA welcomes visitors to new North Entrance with iconic star sculpture. And, JW Marriott opens 342-room luxury hotel at MOA.
  13. Crayola Experience, a creative kids attraction, opens at MOA.
  14. Mall of America celebrates Super Bowl LII with Radio Row, games, parties and other events.
