Specialized Security Units
Mall of America® has a highly trained security department with specialized units including patrol, K9, bike, dispatch, and plain clothes officers. The MOA® security team also works closely with local, state, and federal law enforcement – especially Bloomington Police, who have dedicated onsite Mall units.
Our patrol officers spend the majority of their time out in the Mall, walking the property, responding to requests, and getting to know our tenants and guests. They are often the face of MOA and the first to offer assistance. They are ready and trained to respond to all needs.
You may see some furry friends walking around MOA with our officers, but they have a serious job and they are very good at it. The K9 unit has dual-purpose capabilities in explosive detection and firearm detection. They go through extensive training and are certified through the United States Police Canine Association. These dogs are working, so please respect their space but if you ask their handler nicely, they may just let you meet them and hand you a K9 trading card.
Our dedicated team of bike patrol officers cover the entire outdoor space on MOA property. Their mobility and speed allow them to respond to needs quickly. And believe it or not, they patrol every day of the year.
We have a highly trained dedicated behavior detection unit (plain clothes officers) that specialize in monitoring unusual behavior, vehicles, and objects. While guests may never notice these officers, they are ever present providing a vigilant eye for potential problems.
Our dispatch center allows our security team to work closely with numerous internal and external departments to quickly relay messages and handle requests for assistance from guests and tenants. Like a modern 911 call center, this team monitors hundreds of cameras and helps route officers when help is needed.
With millions of vehicles coming to Mall of America every year, ensuring traffic efficiency is necessary to ensure a positive guest experience. This is why we employ a dedicated traffic control unit, who assist guests getting parked as quickly as possible.
Mall of America works closely with law enforcement partners on the city, county, state, and federal level including collaborations with Bloomington Police, Metro Transit, Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, State Patrol, BCA, Homeland Security, and the FBI. Bloomington Police are always onsite and have a substation on MOA property with a dedicated team of officers assigned specifically to Mall of America.
The Mall of America security team is also involved in many security organizations such as ASIS, the Domestic Security Alliance Council, Minnesota Organized Retail Crime Association, Association of Threat Assessment Professionals, Hennepin County Shield, MN Chiefs of Police Association, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
